Council Jobs Australia is the phrase people use when they are looking for work in Australian local government. Council Careers is the job board that answers it. The site brings together live vacancies from councils and public sector employers across every state and territory, so you can compare roles in one place instead of checking council websites one at a time. Searching and applying is free for candidates.

Start from the state page for where you live. Council Careers publishes a page of current vacancies for each state and territory, covering New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. From there you can narrow by location, category and employment type, or use the interactive councils map to browse by area.

All eight. Council Careers lists local government vacancies in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. Each state has its own page of current openings, updated as councils publish them.

Pay in local government is generally set by the Local Government Industry Award (MA000112), which the Fair Work Ombudsman administers, or by an enterprise agreement negotiated at the individual council. That means rates follow published standards rather than being set case by case. Where a council states a salary on its listing, you will see it on the job page, along with the employment type and the closing date.

Far more than most people expect. Local government runs libraries, depots, childcare centres, pools, parks, planning counters and engineering teams, so vacancies span community services, engineering and asset management, planning and development, environmental health, finance, communications, human resources, economic development and administration. Roles range from entry level and casual through to senior and executive appointments.

Throughout the week rather than in a single batch, because each council publishes on its own schedule. Listings come down on the closing date the council sets, so what you see on the site is current rather than an archive. It is worth checking back or searching again rather than relying on one visit.

Yes. Searching, filtering and applying are free for candidates, and there is no charge to create a profile or upload a resume. Councils and employers pay to advertise, which is what funds the site. You apply to the hiring council directly, with no recruiter in between.
